Why is Tire Rotation Important?

Row of tires

You’ve probably been given reminders by concerned family members or your mechanic to rotate your tires on a regular basis. But what does rotating your tires do? Why rotate tires at all? Our service center staff wants you to be safe when traveling on our Camden-area roads. We’ve put together the handy guide below on why tire rotation is so important, as well as how often to rotate the tires on your car.

Why Rotate Tires? What Does Rotating Your Tires Do?

So, what does rotating your tires do, exactly? Rotating your tires at appropriate intervals will prevent your tires from wearing unevenly, which, in turn, will prevent other problems. Unevenly-worn tires are not safe for driving along our Columbia streets. And considering the money you save from not having to replace your tires as often as you would otherwise, regular tire rotation just makes sense.

Why Rotate Your Tires

  • Regularly rotated tires last longer
  • Unevenly-worn tires can be dangerous on slippery roads or in an emergency.
  • Unevenly-worn tires on an AWD vehicle can cause undue strain on the drivetrain
  • Neglecting to rotate your tires could void your warranty

How to Rotate Tires – by Drivetrain

Did you know that the way in which tires are rotated and how frequently this is done depends on the type of drivetrain you have? It’s also different if you own a truck with a dually. Here’s how to rotate tires, in case you’re considering doing it yourself:

4WD, FWD, and RWD Vehicles

  • How often to rotate tires: every 6,000 to 8,000 miles
  • Rotate the front driver side tire with the rear passenger side tire
  • Rotate the front passenger side tire with the rear driver side tire.

Dually pickup trucks (with four rear wheels)

  • How often to rotate tires: every 6,000 to 8,000 miles or every six months
  • Rear inside tire on the passenger side: transfer to front passenger side
  • Rear outside tire on the passenger side: transfer to the inside
  • Rear inside tire on the driver side: transfer to front driver side
  • Rear outside tire on the driver side: transfer to the inside
  • Front driver side tire: transfer to rear driver side outside
  • Front passenger side tire: transfer to rear passenger side outside

All-Wheel Drive Vehicles

  • How often to rotate tires: every 5,000 to 7,500 miles
  • Don’t do this yourself! Leave rotating tires on an AWD to professionals only.
